Young Carers Case Study – C’s Short Break

This year’s theme for Young Carers Action Day is “Give Me a Break.” Carers of Dundee are presenting a short case study series that highlights various examples of how young carers in Dundee have received much-needed breaks.

In this case, we follow young carer C, who helps support a younger sibling who has Autism and ADHD, and parent who has fibromyalgia and mental health challenges.

During a conversation with a Short Breaks broker, it was shared that C enjoys being active and regularly participates in swimming and football. C also loves horses and was keen to try horse riding lessons. C was awarded funding to access five lessons plus horse riding books and horse top trump playing cards!

After the break C’s parent shared with the Short Breaks Team that “C has really benefitted from this funding. It gave her freedom from her caring role and helped her achieve a dream of hers. C is very grateful for the opportunities this short break has opened for her.”

This break has given C the confidence to pursue a new hobby and helped them make new friends. C is going to continue with the lessons.
