This year’s theme for Young Carers Action Day is “Give Me a Break.” Carers of Dundee are presenting a short case study series that highlights various examples of how young carers in Dundee have received much-needed breaks.
In this case, we follow young carer B who helps care for their cousin who has a physical disability and lives with them. B keeps their cousin company and keeps them calm.
B loves gymnastics and attends several times a week, regularly taking part in competitions. When discussing short breaks, it was clear that B had a passion for gymnastics. B was very keen to get a new springboard and beam so that they could practice at home.
The Short Break gave B an outlet at home to take time for themself and hone their skills. B has recently moved up into the higher-level gymnastics section and now attends 14 hours a week rather than 6. B’s family share that it is a lot of hard work, but B loves it and is doing brilliantly for their age.
