The Carers Leave Act is due to come into effect for employers throughout Scotland and the rest of UK in early 2024. Here is what you need to know about the new legislation and how you can prepare your business for these changes.
History of the Carers Leave Act
In June 2022 a Carers Leave Bill originated in the House of Commons as a private members bill sponsored by Wendy Chamberlain MP for North East Fife. Carers UK worked closely with Wendy as the bill progressed through both the Commons and the House of Lords, finally gaining Royal Ascent and becoming the Carers Leave Act on the 24th May 2023.
What does this mean for Scottish employers?
When the Carers Leave Act comes into effect, it will guarantee 5 days of unpaid leave to employees who are carers in their home lives. These days can be taken flexibly in individual or half days.
