Young Carers Case Study – Young Carer Grant

This year’s theme for Young Carers Action Day is “Give Me a Break.” Carers of Dundee are presenting a short case study series that highlights various examples of how young carers in Dundee have received much-needed breaks.

In this case, a young carer (D) takes care of their sibling (B), who has autism. D recently met with Katriona, a Development Worker from Dundee Carers Centre.

During their meeting, Katriona informed D about the Young Carers Grant and assisted in completing the application. They discussed how D wanted to use the funding, and D expressed a passion for animals. This led to D deciding to use part of the grant to enjoy a keeper experience at Edinburgh Zoo.

Additionally, Katriona helped D apply for the Short Break Fund through Dundee Carers Centre. D chose to use this funding to purchase a year’s membership to Edinburgh Zoo, allowing them to visit as often as they wish. With free bus travel, D will only need to cover the cost of lunch or snacks for each trip.

D is thrilled about the opportunity to have a keeper experience and to explore behind the scenes at the zoo. They look forward to visiting Edinburgh Zoo frequently, as they love animals and plan to study zoology at university.

D’s parent also texted Katriona, saying:

“D loves it there [Edinburgh Zoo]. Thanks for helping her with this.”
