Young Carers Case Study – A’s Short Break

This year’s theme for Young Carers Action Day is “Give Me a Break.” Carers of Dundee are presenting a short case study series that highlights various examples of how young carers in Dundee have received much-needed breaks.

In this case, we follow young carer (A) who helps care for their parent who has both physical and mental health challenges. A was referred to the Short Breaks Team at Dundee Carers Centre.

A regularly attends cadets and it became apparent through the brokerage conversation that it was a big part of their life.

A was awarded short breaks funding to help cover the cost of a two-week cadet camp during the summer holidays. The first week involved lots of training, field work and team-building exercises, and the second week saw A visiting theme parks and museums.
A had an amazing time at the camp. It gave A a complete break from their caring role, a chance to recharge whilst also providing a great opportunity for personal development.

A’s parent is certain that A’s confidence has grown since attending cadets and feel they have become much more sociable outside of cadets too. Since A came back from camp they have continued with training and have now been promoted to Sergeant.
